In the novel of The Chosen written by Chaim Potok, It’s about two boys Danny Saunders and Reuven Malter growing up in different views of life. Both boys even end up resenting each other for their differences without giving each other the chance to see how much they actually have in common in the beginning of the book. Every child is raised in a different way by their parents. Growing up you’re taught a way of life from what religious beliefs, education, and how you much you'll be accepting of others that are different from you, are all demonstrated by your parents. They spend most of their time studying Talmud in the library, Talmud is extremely time consuming and also takes a great deal of memorization. Reuven describes the hard work it takes by saying, “To study Talmud is not such a simple thing. Talmud is a task for all day and all night. (5.132) one day when they were studying. Even Danny’s thirst for knowledge and curiosity of the universe leads him to reading Freud, after he read some works of a German philospher. Danny tells Reuven,“‘You’ve heard of Freud. He started psychoanalysis. I’m teaching myself German so I can read him in orginal’”(8.227). Danny even reads 7 books outside of his school work(4.298) For both Danny and Reuven education is a giant part of their life, for Reuven its great bonding time with his father. For Danny its the only time his father will talk to him, on the other hand learning and studying give Danny comfort from the silence that he grows up from. Both boys inherit their love of learning from their fathers.
