Interview Planning and Preparation Introduction Asian people have unique struggles because they are very different based on the area they are from. They still share some experiences even though they are very different. In this paper I will explore what I have heard and been taught about Asian people and their culture. The Chosen Primary Identity Group and Reasons for This Choice My primary identity group is Asian ethnicity. I was on the basketball team and when my school went to visit other “smarter” schools, I noticed many of the players were Asian. My family would also tell me that Asians are very smart, and they are going to run all the companies one day. It also seems like all Asian people are successful doctors. A pediatrician I saw a lot when I was a kid was from China. I also had a dentist who was Asian. So, I always associated Asian people with successful doctors. One of the most surprising ways I heard the model minority stereotype was from another student at the University of Illinois. I was sitting in a lecture and I started talking with the people around me. I was asking them why they took this class. A boy that was from China responded to that question by saying, “Well I heard this class was easy and you know us Asians we always have to have a good GPA”. I was surprised by this statement not because he knew that that is a stereotype many Americans hold, but because he said it out loud. One reason why I thought this to be true is because when my dad would call the company that our computers and electronics came from an Indian person would always be the one to talk to us. Since being at the University of Illinois I know that not all Indian people are technology service representatives, but when I was younger and had no exposure to those people I thought that was true. My freshman year of high school I read a novel called Nectar in a Sieve. The novel followed a poor Indian family and their struggles. After reading this book I assumed that most people that live in India are poor. By reading that book and thinking that all Indian people were technology service people I thought I was right, but by meeting people from India at the University, I know that is not
