In “The Chrysanthemums” By John Steinbeck the main character is Elisa Allen, she is a strong woman who has planting hands. Her planting hands have a mind of their own and destroy pests before they can destroy her plants. She is so good at planting her flowers that she is smug and confident about her plants and loves to talk about them, whether it is to her husband or to a complete stranger. She is resistant with the man who comes to ask for work mending pots and sharpening knives and scissors that is until he mentions her flowers. She feels that she could make it out in the world just like the man does even though it is no place for a woman. She is almost the same way with the man who comes to ask for work. At first with the gentleman she is curt and she does not want him to work on any pots or sharpen any knives and scissors. But when he starts to take an interest in the flowers and saying that he knows a lady who wants some seeds to start growing some chrysanthemums, Elisa starts to open up a bit to the man. She says that you can start with seeds but it is much easier if you start with the sprouts. The Garden Helper online also states that “Chrysanthemums can be started as seeds, from cuttings and dividing, or can be purchased at a nursery in sizes from bedding plants up to gallon size and larger.” She starts to get a pot ready to give him so he can travel easier and take the flowers to the woman he knows. She also starts tell him how to take care of the flowers so he can tell the woman. She goes to great lengths to make sure he gets the instruction right and so the flowers will make the trip safely. She becomes very upset when she sees that the man has thrown out the flowers on the side of the road. She feels betrayed and
