The Civil Rights Movement was a struggle centered around African Americans and it occurred from as early as the 1950s and as late as the 1960s. The struggle was mainly African Americans citizens fighting to achieve civil rights equal to that of white citizens in America. It was a time of great racial tension, and most of that tension was located within the southern state of America. The high levels of racial tension and violence in the South can be directly related to the South’s deep history with slavery. The southern states of America were very agricultural based in early colonial American and are even still agricultural based in today’s society, and their heavy dependence on slavery caused many white southerners to prefer the slavery system. The first few days were uneventful throughout the state; however, Asa Carter came to Clinton, Tennessee in order to rally supporters to protest the newly desegregated Clinton High School. His presence caused a rally of white protesters to quickly turn into a mob that started to attach passing African Americans. The local authorities feared that it would get worse and called for aid from Governor Clement, who quickly sent in the National Guard, which quickly established order to the community. The Governor’s quick action is completely opposite to what happened during the Arkansas’ Little Rock Central High School crisis. At the Little Rock crisis, the National Guard had to turn away the new African American, for the mob was too much to handle. At least in at the Clinton High School protest the mob was small enough to handle and break apart. The way that the Clinton, Tennessee mod was so easily broken apart in comparison to the Little Rock, Arkansas shows how small the level of opposition to integration in Tennessee was in comparison to other southern
