There are many types of love in life such as romantic, selfless, and religious love. In ‘The Clod and the Pebble’ and ‘Song’ the love is secular and selfless. In both ‘The Clod and the Pebble’ and ‘Song’ love is presented as cruel and selfish, constantly exploiting from their love. There are some similarities between the poems, such as both poems expressing love as being negative using imageries and metaphors. However, there are also significant differences such as ‘The Clod and the Pebble’ giving more balanced view of love than ‘Song’ and ‘The Clod and the Pebble’ presents the love more maturely than ‘Song.’ The main ways the differences are presented include imagery, symbolism, and personification. In ‘Song’ Lady Mary Wroth cynically presents love as avaricious and cruel. The line ‘Love a child is every crying / Please him, and he straight is flying’ personifies love as a greedy child who cannot be satisfied. The word ‘child’ and ‘flying’ is an example of symbolism of ‘Cupid’ who shoots arrows at people and cause love between each other. Both of the poems use similar imageries and both poems are based on poet’s experience. However, there are significant differences such as ‘Song’ being more subjective than the other poem. I think ‘The Clod and the Pebble’ is more effective demonstrating the realities of love because ‘Song’ has personified love as a child which makes me think ‘Song’ have viewed love in more immature way than ‘The Clod and the Pebble.’ Also, I think ‘The Clod and the Pebble’ gave more objective approach to present love than ‘Song’ as it gave more balanced arguments whereas in ‘Song’ Lady Mary Wroth used extended metaphor to emphasise how negative love
