Celie's Letters to God “Dear God, I am fourteen years old. I have always been a good girl. Maybe you can give me a sign letting me know what is happening to me.” In the critically acclaimed film, “ The Color Purple,” in Celie's early life, she is going through a lot physically and mentally. Celie has been abused by her so called “father” and conceives two children that are taken right out of her hands. Alice Walker uses the protagonist, character Celie to express what is taking place in her life. Throughout different adversaries and eventually comes out victorious. In depth, one may see more of what the true significance of the letters really mean.

Celie confesses to Shug a dear friend, “that she see's God as a white man with a beard,” but now she understands that God isn't male or female- neither a race. For a while, Celie wanders off from God preferring to write to Nettie. However, her last letter is again written to God (shmoop.com2015). To further explain, the intense relationships that Celie experiences with men causes her to think that all men are no good and do not care about her. For example in the film, Celie's dad sold her to Mister__ but Mister__ did not take a liking to Celie. Mister __ is more fond of Nettie because of her beauty (Walker1985). For instance, “You sholl is ugly” those words came right out of the mouth of Miss Shug Avery a beautiful woman and a dear friend to Celie. Although, Celie was known for being ugly, Mister__ treated her as if she was a ugly maid instead of his wife. Celie does stray away from God, due to wanting to communicate with her sister Nettie in their absence. But Celie finds her way back into his presence because she is not getting a respond from Nettie,only because Mister__ hides all of Nettie's letters to Celie. Overall, Celie's lost of communication with her sister Nettie brings her back into God's
