Everyone needs a coping mechanism to overcome their problems and in Indian Horse by Richard Wagamese the protagonist Saul uses hockey to escape his issues. Racism is still a very prominent issue in America today. Yes, it has improved from the days of slavery, and we do have a black president; but society is nowhere near equal, and that is not acceptable. White Privilege by Paula Rothenberg truly opened my eyes to the extent of the social injustice on African Americans. Many people are implicitly racist, meaning that they are unaware of their racism. And in fact, just by being white, one is oppressing another race because the privilege and respect that comes with the skin color.
Racism is almost everywhere and has been around for years and we have just been chipping at it every second we can. The civil rights movement was a huge impact on the topic of racism and it is full of stories within it. Cases and trials of people who meant no trouble yet was judged by their skin. We know these people as black people, these people have been put through hardship during this time and are still being affected to this day. Brown V. Board of Education tell about how black children wanting the same education as white children.
In conclusion, racism is an awful idea that used to be very present, but now everyone can accept every race most of the time. This is only because race and racism are social constructs that are no help to anything, and this is why racism is not relevant today. Finally, in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, we learn how racism affected people, now, things have changed and racism doesn’t affect people as much, because race is a social construct, is not as relevant today and we have developed acceptance of every
There is still extensive evidence to support that racism is still running rampant, and not only in America. While it is definitely more subdued than it was fifty years ago, there are still remnants from past generation’s opinions showing themselves in the adults who were raised by them. There are still race riots, most famously being Ferguson and Baltimore. Plus, these are just a few instances of an injustice towards one particular minority. Racism is still present in society today in a new form dubbed institutional racism. By definition, to institutionalize something is to establish in practice or custom. According to Wikipedia, Institutionalized discrimination refers to the unjust and discriminatory mistreatment of an individual or group of individuals by society and its institutions as a whole, through unequal selection or bias, intentional or unintentional; as opposed to individuals making a conscious choice to discriminate. Racism has been around for a long time and it still exists today. It has been embedded to a degree that it reproduces itself. It is in the culture of the future generation. What is seen and taught to us in our environment is how we learn our behavior and actions towards others. Because of this, whether we realize it or not, racist behavior is taught and passed on.
Current Racism in America The Civil Rights movement brought segregation to a general close but many people have the illusion that it ended all racism when in actuality, racism is still very much a problem in this country even though it is kept under wraps and disguised. It only keeps progress from occurring and limits the social progression of a society that is expected to be great. Denial of the issue doesn’t mean it does not exist. While men and women of all colors can now drink from the same fountain, they are not safe from institution discrimination or even dirty looks from their peers.

Nowadays society thinks that everyone is being equal by the way they treat each other. They think that racism is no longer around, and that people are getting better at it. Yes, Racism has improved, however, there are many different types of racism that are going on till this day. People try to say that racism doesn 't exist anymore, that it is a thing in the past. While in reality, that is not the case. People all over the world still hold racist thoughts towards people of color. Sometimes it’s not even purposefully, but it is just an engrained habit, which is called internalized racism. To some, even though they believe that racism still exists, they believe that their aren 't any negative effects, that is just an opinion.

We see it every day, some have even been confronted by racial discrimination, or racial slurs even. We see how the system could be for example: how blacks continue to get more severe punishments or blacks have higher the chance to get criminally sentenced than whites.

According to dictionary.com the defintion of racism is: “the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics, abilities, or qualities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.” Race was created socially by how people perceive ideas and faces people are not used to yet. It is the “hatred” of one person to another individual, solely based on that person's belief that the person is inferior because of their language, birthplace and skin colour. Racism is an issue that has lasted throughout history, providing justification for a group’s dominance over another.
