One of the common themes is the theme of friendship. The book portrays both Tabby and Matt’s friendship with each other by talking about childhood memories and how close they both still are as freshmen. In Matt’s point of view, he talks about the fold memories he had with Tabby, like her getting his first girlfriend and their love for gravy. One of the fondest memories of Tabby is a memory that compiles over three chapters, and the memory is about a made-up game of softball. He, along with Tabby, played with each other when they were young, and Tabby remembers when she defended Matt when a bully came by. Near the beginning of the story, they head out to trick-or-treating and separated the candies together. During Thanksgiving, Tabby comes over to eat turkey with the Wainwrights. Aside from memories, both of them also visit each other and play board games, and sometimes with Matt’s little brother. Since Tabby’s mother’s death, all three of them consider each other “siblings”. Matt and Tabby take the bus together, where Matt uses the time riding the bus to talk to Tabby as much as possible, due to their different classes and friend groups. They also have had small fights, one being significant in the story, but easily get over it as both of them don’t want to break of their long friendship. The theme of friendship can also be seen between Matt and Trip, who have also been friends for a long time. Although their friendship isn’t as long as Matt and Tabby’s, they hang out a lot on campus. Both Matt and Trip play videogames with each other and also text each other everyday, and have more interaction with each other than Matt and Tabby.
