Humans are in situations that challenge their lives, they must guard themselves through trials and hardships. Natural disasters, violent conflicts, and war can create the need for survival skills. Living in a forest area demands survival skills to survive in it, people sometimes go to great lengths. Within them they carry the great essence, that inspires the will to go on.
The place humans have in Carter’s version of the natural world is an existence. The story “The Company of Wolves" takes place in a forested, in coldest season winter in the dead country. Wolves are ruthless beings who love to terrify and kill those who are not strong. Ruthless especially in the winter because food is rare. Furthermore, wolves are not even part human and so they can’t listen to reason on top of that they’re smart creatures. Humans are pressured to prepare and have survival skills because it is scary. They are scared to be eaten by wolves in the forest. Another incident that occurred in the story was that a young woman's husband disappeared on their wedding night. After he disappeared, she heard howling of a wolf and then when she realized he was gone and he’s not coming home, she remarried and had children. On winter, after years her first husband returned looking as dirty as a wolf and when he saw the woman's new husband and he felt jealous. Like how she can remarry and have kids so, he wished himself to turn back into a wolf. To bite off one of her children’s feet before the second husband chopped him to death. And then he turned back into a man and looked exactly as he had on his wedding night. The woman wept after witnessing her former lover dead on the floor and her husband beats her for
