One of the biggest issues facing this great nations citizens and even some of our war hero veterans, is that of being homeless. As well as residing in poor income housing and very poor conditions. With the number of homes and land available throughout the country, and the majority of it being owned by private interest and banks is an outrage. If we do not deal with homelessness and poverty, we may end up like Detroit, Michigan.
The homeless require help to get out of the situations they are in, but often people do not offer help because they attach negative symbols to the homeless. The social interactionist theory tries to understand how society views the homeless and how the homeless view themselves, based on the symbols that are projected onto homeless people. During the 1970s Madison Square Garden was filled with homeless people. Rising rents caused many people to lose their homes and apartments and to join the homeless community. Dozens of homeless women lived in the public restrooms as an attempt to escape the harsh weather.
Homelessness. Goldberg draws attention to the homeless advertised on the nightly news were "sympathetic souls who told stories about how, because of hard times, they were temporarily down on their luck" (Goldberg 2001, 68) where compared to the homeless Goldberg described as "the ones on the sidewalk, by and large, were weirdos or drug addicts or schizophrenics" who "mumbled crazy things" (Goldberg 2001, 68). The exaggeration the media drew about a small fraction of the homeless in America was the ultimate call for support and compassion from watching audiences. Goldberg called this "prettifying of reality" (Goldberg 2001, 69). Following the media exaggeration for viewer sympathy, numbers of the homeless in America were rapidly becoming expansive:

There are over 600,000 homeless people in America today. This has become a big issue over time that needs attention. No one likes to see people in need, struggling to make a living. Homelessness in America is constantly being talked about, but no one makes a move to help all of those people who need it. There are a lot of problems that come with homelessness, such as finding a way to fund this project, how are the homeless going to be helped in the meantime, and how are they going to be assisted after they find decent homes.
Youth Homelessness in America Every year, millions of people are experiencing some form of homelessness in the United States alone. Of those people who are experiencing homelessness, a large proportion of them is under the age of 24. Data has found that there are over 550,000 youth have experienced homelessness for more than a week over the course of a year (“Youth and Young Adults,” 2018). In many cases, youth homelessness can be prevented, but the lack of resources and services available to youth is limited. As a result, the issue continues to grow and affect more and more youth have to experience homelessness.
The sociological imagination is thinking that is done with the realization that both the individual’s experience and the historical context which they live in must be looked at to fully gain insight about the world around them (Elwell, 2006). In other words, “the individual and society cannot be understood apart from each other” (Pyyhtinen, 2016, p. 4). The intersection of the two is where valuable information is found. The sociological imagination requires the ability to change between perspectives of biography and history (Mills, 1959). One can practice the craft of sociological thought by using the sociological imagination.
Homelessness is one the most ignored problems in the United States with citizen and politician. Homeless people are walked by and ignored. Nobody ever thinks that they will be homeless. Due to the economy, people live paycheck to paycheck making house payments very difficult. Most people will want to believe most homeless people are drug addicts or alcoholics, but most people will be surprise to know that it is no all true.
The issue of homelessness in America has been evident since the early 1600’s. Across the country men, women and children spend their nights on the streets not knowing when or if they will ever find a permanent home. States and federal officials or city councils have tried to alleviate or at least reduce the number of homeless over the last several decades at a city, state or national level but it continues to be an ongoing problem. There is a multitude of factors that account for the growing homeless population that affects each state in the country differently. Though there are many contributing factors that contribute to the amount of people living on the street at any given night in the U.S.
Homelessness amongst the youth is a serious issue in America. Homeless youth, sometimes are referred to as unaccompanied youth. Unaccompanied youth are children and youth who are homeless and on their own that is not living with their families. This group includes runaway youth, youth whose parents encouraged them to leave or locked them out of their home, and independent youth from families where irreconcilable conflicts or loss of contact have made it impossible for them to return home ("Homeless Children and Youth," 2015).
In this essay, I am analyzing one picture for the topic of homelessness. The Effects of Poverty, Homelessness, and Hunger in Education Even before a child is born, they are affected by their environment. Poverty in children can be seen at a very young age. Mothers that live in poverty have babies with low birth weight and medical problems. Poverty, homelessness, and hunger can have extremely negative effects on the brain and body. It also affects a child’s education and learning ability.
Data and Analysis My main focuses were on the types of people walking about (e.g. I observed homeless people walking with shopping carts), the amount of maintenance (trash piling where trash cans should be), and the surrounding structures. This allowed me to see a general demographic of people and the present economic class . From my observations, the streets are not well-cared for, having uneven pavement and depressions. Graffiti is also a prominent feature and is all over buildings, ATM machines, signposts, parking meters--almost any available flat surface.
