Wasted Lives:The Consequence of Unethical Behavior There are often people who go through life and become very successful. They grow up, go to school, get a job, get married, have children, etc. These type of people are categorized as individuals who have taken advantage of the opportunities that life has to offer. Then there are those who don’t do some or any of these things. These individuals are categorized as individuals who have wasted their lives. This usually happens through the act of unethical behavior which is why these individuals don't get married, have children, etc. Because they make unethical choices, people are throwing their lives away. There are many examples of such people. In the story “Troll Bridge” by Neil Gaiman, the protagonist is a curious boy who stumbles upon an intriguing path in the woods. This path led the protagonist to a bridge where he meets a troll. The troll wishes to eat the protagonist’s life. She describes how the term “waste” is a metaphor that “names the ever present possibility of failure in life”(Fullager, 291). Simone Fullagar is speaking through the avenue of suicide which strongly pertains to the concept of wasted lives. An idea she brings up is about shame. She states that “shame exists in an oppositional relation to joy, pleasure, and sociability, implicating the self in a spiral of negativity, depression, helplessness, that in turn produces a desire to escape oneself”(Fullager,291). Making unethical choices is what brings people to feel shameful. The protagonist in “Troll Bridge” cheated on his wife, causing his wife to leave him.
