Human nature depicts time as a necessary component of our lives. We learn how to live with time by adjusting our daily routines to something that we believe is not in our power to control. Our understanding of time lies in the theoretical world; Time is not something we can physically prove. The past, present, and future all dictate our continued progress of existence. However, can this progress of time be tampered with? In the movie, La Jetee, the main purpose is to assert the idea that humans are unwilling to comply with the chronological law of time. The protagonist in the movie finds comfort in an image of a woman’s face from his past which, when faced with a trip to his future, makes him reluctant to leave this past image. The familiarity with the past lets the protagonist develop a romantic relationship with the woman in this past. In the museum, there is a scene where the light illuminates the back of her neck and shows the protagonist staring at it. This purpose of the illumination is to bring this romantic relationship he has with his past into focus. However, the future In the sequence where the man and the woman are taking ‘countless’ walks in the park, they come across a barrier. When the man realizes that he cannot go any further with his past, he begins to look angry, following a change in the background music to a chilling tune. We can interpret that the protagonist is not happy that he cannot continue with his past. Instead, after the voiceover states that there is a barrier, the happy moment with his past is cut with an chilling image of the scientist. The camera angle perceives a low angle and eyeline match shot which makes the scientist look strong and powerful compared to the protagonist. We can represent the barrier as the scientist due to the dramatic switch of happy, realistic background music and setting to an eerie, dark background music and setting.
