The topic I am selecting to do research on is censorship in the media. Censorship has been a controversial topic even before all the types of media we have today. Censorship in the media expands over all types. Censorship can include anything from bleeped out words in songs to what is actually allowed to be released on the news. Censorship may also involve things that don't necessarily come first to mind, such as what people are allowed to post on Instagram. Most people based their ideas and thoughts off of what they hear or see through all types of media. Censorship determines what and when we are allowed to see and hear. Movies come with different ratings stating who is allowed to view the movie based on on content, therefore protecting children from inappropriate content. Movies also seem to allow more in what content is allowed to be shown. For example, an unrated or R rated movie can consist of very detailed scenes that are meant for adult viewers only. Regarding what is seen on the television, most shows are censored to fit a general audience. Channels as well also have different guidelines as to what they air. For example, there are stations for kids like The Disney Channel and Nickelodeon while some channels are for adults such as Comedy Central. As for censorship on the news, it keeps what the government does a secret or what the government does not want us to hear.. People around the world watch the news in order to gather new information, therefore making up their own minds based on what they hear. However as of lately “fake news” has been sharing false information and facts about the government. For finding the information, I want to look at databases that have articles showing statistics on censorship in the media. This way I know I am most likely finding credible information that I can use in my essay. However, other sources such as websites, newspapers, and even magazine articles would work as well. I found a database with a article on censorship. Beacon for Freedom of Expression is a database that includes a link called “On Censorship”. Through this link, there are more links in which you can explore censorship in different countries as well as in the press. I also found an organization online which is based on a wide variety of topics in the digital world. This organization is called the Electronic Frontier Foundation. They wrote one blog called “Free Speech” and it talks about censorship and how it affects the people. This organization also has many other blogs regarding censorship. I plan to use organizations like these in order to obtain information that is not influenced by outside sources as I feel the reading contains more accurate and truthful
