Electronic dance music, or EDM as it is more commonly referred to, is a collection of music genres that are predominantly created using electronic synthesizers for the purpose of being played in dance-based entertainment environments. Electronic Dance Music has gained popularity in the past couple of years and with this popularity comes, the price of having people with little to no knowledge creating thoughts and ideas that are not fully true. These ideas and speculations have created common misconceptions that are simply accepted as reality due to lack of knowledge, but with even the smallest glimpse of the truth one begins to realize that they simply aren’t true. Not only is it an art to create music, but EDM producers take it a step forward by making it the science that it truly is. There has to be a basic understanding of sound waves and how they react to certain frequencies and the certain tonal sounds that are generated when combined, as well as a basic comprehension of music theory. Zedd is currently one of the most popular DJ’s in the world, currently having a collaboration song with Ariana Grande being number one on Billboard’s Top 100 list. During an interview with Ean Golden from djtechtools.com, Zedd described how he believes that many people in the music industry lack the knowledge to differentiate between the sound and the music. He then goes on to say, “For example, my father is a great musician and I obviously learned a lot from him. But just because he is not used to electronic music, he never listened to it, he is not able to tell if the song is bad, or if it is it just sounds bad but it actually is very good.” (Zedd, 2013) By that, Zedd is referencing how producers have to create good sounding melodies that are not only catchy but also have a tone that works well with the melody.
