Motherhood is a beautiful transforming event in life for women and similar to marriage motherhood is also an institution. Also similar to marriage motherhood has myths that lie within the institution, it is defined as the motherhood mystique. There are four main myths of motherhood surrounding the ideology of how mothers are to be. First, “motherhood is the ultimate fulfillment of a woman” which implies that all women want to be mothers and have babies at some point in their life. Women who do not fulfill this myth are seen as psychologically disturbed and those that are not able to reproduce are perceived as fundamentally deprived. With all of that women are supposed to actually enjoy taking care of all of those people to be considered a good mother. Women who can not adjust to this lifestyle are assumed to be poorly organized and maladjusted. The problem with this myth is that so much is expected from a women without them receiving any help and at the end of the day they are still looked at as inferior and to top it off they are not giving the same amount of opportunities men are because they are heavily depended on at home. The third myth states “a mother is completely devoted to her family and sacrifices her own needs for her children”. A mother in the eyes of society is supposed to be seen as patient, unselfish and willing to give up anything for the people of her household especially her children. If a women defies this myth she is seen as an inadequate mother and selfish. Women are constantly the ones having to sacrifice for the people in there lives, like giving up a job to stay home with the kids,that myths like this one can make a women not know her self
