Before Act I begins, Arthur Miller gives a brief summary of what was occurring in Salem that lead to the witch trials. He refers to the ideas of taking attendance for church, long-held hatred, and land-lust. In the overture for Act I it states, “walk forth in the time of God’s worship to take notice of such as either lye about the meeting house, without attending to the word and ordinances, or that lye at home or in the fields without giving good account thereof,” (Act I Page 4). This is explaining the idea that people were assigned to make sure that people were attending church and not doing other things with their time.
