The Crucible by Arthur Miller Plot Summary Act I Set in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692, The Crucible opens with two girls dancing in the forest, which was not allowed during this time. One of the girls is the Rev’s daughter. -Rev. Paris’ daughter, Betty, is lying inert. He is worried Betty is sick because of unnatural causes such as witchcraft. He’s mainly concerned because this will look bad on him. Susanna, the doctor’s helper, doesn’t think medicine will help her. Paris is upset because he doesn’t want his reputation ruined. Tituba, a slave who was also in the woods with the girls, is worried for Betty too because she takes care of her. Rev. Paris asks Abigail what they were doing in the forest and she said they were there just for fun. She tells Paris that when he came and found them it scared Betty causing her to faint. Rev. Abigail used to be a nanny to the Proctor’s but was fired when Mrs. Proctor found out that Abigail and John Proctor had sex. Abigail thinks she’s in love with John, but she has sex confused with love. During the scene when Abigail confesses her love to John, Betty is listening to their whole conversion. Goody Proctor didn’t expose Abby because that would also reflect her husband. Thomas Putnam is the son of the wealthiest man in village but got cut out of some of his inheritance in his father’s will. Ruth is Mrs. Ann Putnam’s daughter, and is labeled as dumb due to witchcraft. Goody Putnam is nervous that witches are doing something to Ruth, so she instigates that Ruth go to the forest and find Tituba and conjure up a spell to find out what happened to her babies.
