In the book The Crucible by Arthur Miller, one of the main characters, John Proctor had an affair with Abigail Williams. By doing so, this opens up a big conflict between his wife Elizabeth, Abigail and the Salem court. In court Abigail accused Elizabeth of attempted murder by witchcraft. Their servant Mary Warren, brought home a doll she was making in court with a needle stuck in the stomach. When Reverend Hale visits the Proctors, the town marshals arrive with a warrant for Elizabeth’s arrest.

It soon became a frightening time for the residents of salem because the girls would call random people out and say they came to them in spirit and tried to kill them.

If someone’s name was sullied by a crime or other immorality, no one would do business with them, so it was important to protect one’s name. Judge Danforth was the judge that oversaw all of the court hearings in the Salem Witch Trials.

He uses the opposing forces, the court and the accused, to display how the pride of the judges cost many of the accused their lives. Throughout The Crucible, readers are shown that the pride of the court feeds into the fear of witchcraft all throughout Salem. For instance, Hale, who is a well-educated man, thinks he is above being at fault. As a result, he wrongfully sends many citizens off to their deaths.
Only in rare cases is something so impactful on a story caused by solely one person. Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, luckily, is not one of those cases. There would be much less of a story if it was that simple. The blame of the hysteria that is revolving around Salem is upon many shoulders. The three people that are most intertwined with this are Abigail Williams, John Proctor, and Mary Warren.
Miller uses children as a truth hidden behind a lie as some believe they live in a world of virtue. They were chosen to be the main accusers for their “purity,” their sense of judgement of witchcraft, and their sadistic actions that are considered untrustworthy and unrealistic. Dignity People often feel very strongly about a certain idea or belief. That belief may make up their personality and who they are. Without that idea, they may not exhibit their true identity. Some even go as far to die for that belief because without it they are not themselves.

Destruction has been the end result of pride on many occasions and has found its way to the town of Salem, Massachusetts, where the play The Crucible is set. In Arthur Miller’s play, a group of teenage girls are involved in a witch gathering and are accused of witchcraft, but upon questioning, the girls blame a multitude of townspeople for witchcraft instead. In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible the people of Salem are Puritans. They are portrayed to be extremely religious people. The Puritans believed they were chosen by God to live according to the scriptures. In the small village of Salem all the people believe in the Puritans way of life and tried as they would to follow their scriptures daily. Yet with living so closely with their faith a group of girls are descorved in the woods at a ritual with one of their slaves Tituba.
