Critical Analysis How many people in the world have lied before? Lying is something everyone has done whether they admit to it or not. In the play the Crucible written by Arthur Miller it is based intolerably on lies. It is about a group of girls in Salem, Massachusetts who were caught dancing in the woods. Talks about witches were then brought up and the girls began falsely accusing people of being witches. They do this in order to get people they do not like in trouble. People throughout the entire town then began accusing each other of working with the devil. Eventually hundreds of people were arrested and those who confessed to working with the devil lived while those who did not died. Mary Warren reveals that 39 people are now arrested for being a witch. She tells the Proctors that Goody Osburn will hang. She also says “But not Sarah Good. For Sarah Good confessed, y’see”. Sarah Good lied by confessing to something she really did not do to save herself. It is later revealed in the act that two other people arrested were, Rebbecca Nurse and Martha Corey. Rebecca was arrested on the lie that she killed Mrs Putnam's Babies, and Martha is arrested on the lie that she bewitched Walcott's pigs with her books and now he can not keep a pig alive for more than four weeks. Another lie told is that Abigail accuses Elizabeth Proctor of being a witch and trying to kill her. . Chever says “And demandin’ of her how she come to be so stabbed, she- testify it were your wife’s familiar spirit pushed it in”.(pg…) Abigail saw that Mary Warren had made a poppet for Elizabeth and when she was finished stuck the needle in it to keep it safe. This was a perfect opportunity for Abigail to get Elizabeth accused since she wants John. Consequently she did just that and got Elizabeth arrested.
