Matio Williams 3/19/24 Culture Of Narcissism Paper Narcissism is defined as an excessive interest in or admiration of oneself and one's physical appearance. This definition of narcissism has remained the same for as long as the word has existed but that begs the question of whether our opinions on what makes a narcissist stay the same? Is the old way we used to define narcissism still applicable today that it was back then? In the novel “ The Culture of Narcissism” Christopher makes his feelings known about what he thinks a Narcissist is when he makes the statement “ the narcissist depends on others to validate his self-esteem.He cannot live without a modern audience.”(Lasch 19). This quote gives insight into Lasch's perspective on what a narcissistic person is and the level of self-importance that he operates on and I wanted to use this quote because it's also eerily similar to the way we in modern day define what a narcissist is as seen above, which is a person that is obsessed with himself to the point where they over-inflate their own self-importance. The relevance of this thought process by Lasch is just as applicable today as it was when Lasch wrote his novel in the 1970s because modern people still view this to be the way narcissistic people are like for the most part.
