In the book The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time written by Mark Haddon, Christopher’s digressions reveal that, he does not believe in heaven and God, he likes Sherlock Holmes but dislikes the author, and how he thinks that humans are similar to computers, which correlates to the theme, different opinion help make the world more colourful. The first digression that relates to the theme is how Christopher believes in the science of the universe over heaven and God. This is evident when Christopher says, “If heaven [is] on the other side of a black hole, dead people would have to [fire] into space to get there, and they aren’t or people would notice”(32-33). Furthermore, Christopher discusses how he adores reading the Sherlock Holmes series, but he dislikes the author whose name is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This is revealed when Christopher says “[Sir Arthur Conan Doyle] [is] not like Sherlock Holmes and he [believes] in the supernatural. And when he got old he joined the Spiritual Society, which meant he believed you could communicate with the dead”(88). This digression of Christopher's’ shows that he respects the author as a writer, but he does not like him as a person, the reason for that is because the author believes in something that Christopher disagrees with strongly, and that is believing in communicating with the dead. Lastly, Christopher describes how computers and the human mind are truly similar. To convey this idea, Christopher says “People think computers are different from people because they don’t have minds… but the mind is just a complicated machine”(116).
