In Mark Haddon’s novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime , he conveys the strains of becoming a free person in society through the use of the main subject independence. Our main character Christopher is coming-of-age and has a great desire to find his purpose in the world, due to his setbacks from his condition it makes it difficult to do so. Christopher possess what every coming of age teen posses a burning desire to do you want without anyone else choosing what you do in life. This can be seen in Christopher’s rebellious attitude in the beginning of the novel when he goes against his Father’s rule when investigating into the dead dog. Christopher had to break out of his rigid comfort zone in order to become an independent kid.
