In the story, “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time,” there are three very important parts of the story. These three components are conflict, point-of-view, and plot. These things are a key part of the story because they build up the tension and help to tell the story well. The first important component of the story is conflict. In this story, there are many incidents in which intense conflict arises. An example of a time in which conflict arose was when Christopher realized that his mother was still alive. The text states, “Mother had not had a heart attack. Mother had not died. Mother had been alive all the time. And Father had lied about it” (Haddon 112). In this story, the point-of-view is in the first person. This allows the reader to look into the mind of a boy with autism. An example of a time where you see the first-person point-of-view is when Christopher introduces himself. The text states, “My name is Christopher John Francis Boone. I know all the countries of the world and their capital cities and every prime number up to 7,057” (Haddon 3). This quote proves that first-person point-of-view is a key part of the story. It allows the reader to see the personality of Christopher, which would not be able to be seen in a third-person point-of-view. A second example of point-of-view shown in the story is when Christopher is looking at cars out of the bus window. The text states, “The next day I saw four yellow cars in a row on the way to school, which made it a Black Day” (Haddon 53). This quote proves that first-person point-of-view is a key part of the story because the reader is able to see more of how Christopher thinks. Since he does not like the color yellow, it is a Black Day when he sees a lot of yellow cars. Being in first-person point-of-view allows the reader to further understand his thinking.
