“The Dark is Rising” was written in 1973. 1973 was a time where fantasy and fiction books boomed. Susan Cooper wrote this book to make children’s imagination stronger and wilder. She wanted to help children get out of the real world and live their own through imaginations. Once, Susan went to a hospital where kids with cancer were at, and saw that they were all sad and lonely. The kids with cancer inspired Susan to write fiction books to help them get out of their shells and really just enjoy themselves.

Will has gotten bigger and stronger, but his mentor has gotten sick. Will, furious, is determined to defeat the Dark. His mentor still trains Will because he wants Will to save the world from darkness. His mentor pushes and pushes Will, training him non-stop everyday. Soon, Merriman sends Will off to defeat the Dark when he was only 14 years old.

Time
Will, ever since he was a little boy, was the “Chosen One.” Will needs time to train and learn life. Unfortunately, time isn’t on his side. The time keeps moving, therefore, the darkness getting stronger and stronger. Time is still a big deal to him and the Old Ones. It generate life meaning and values to Will that life will keep moving on even when you make a mistake.
Good VS. Evil
Will and his mentor have finally finished the training process to defeating the Dark after many years. Merriman sends Will off on a missions to defeat the darkness. Will, feels nervous to finally get out of his hidings and actually face the real world. His mentor sends off Farmer Dawson to look out for Will as he gets a feeling that the Dark could possibly destroy Will since they got stronger. When Will goes on his mission to defeat the Dark, he had to find six signs in order to find the Dark. The six signs were like prophecies, visioning the future for Will as he gets closer and closer to his target. The Signs were made of different elements to represent the elements of life. There are six different Old One’s village that he has to find in order to get the Signs. He has to meet the Old One’s and train with them in order to earn the different Signs.
Light and Dark
"If you can accomplish that, you will have brought to life one of the three great forces that the Old Ones must turn soon towards vanquishing the powers of the Dark, which are reaching out now steadily and stealthily over all this world" (Cooper 59).
Light and Dark represent two opposing forces. The Old One’s are the Light and the Rider are the Dark. Will learns that being an Old One is to know who’s on your side and who you’re fighting against.
