The happiest place on earth is known for being a theme park with noteworthy rides, such as; Pirates of the Caribbean, Splash Mountain, and of course the Tea Cups. Every ride at Disneyland has a grand history of development prior to the creation of the ride itself. However, every ride at the happiest place on earth has its own history, but not as complex as The Haunted Mansion. To the average Disneyland attendee, they may assume that The Haunted Mansion is an opening day attraction. Nonetheless, the concept of a haunted attraction predates Disneyland’s own opening in 1955.. As mentioned before, two Disney Imagineers, Marc Davis, and Claude Coates had disputes over if the attraction should be scary or comedic in the classic Disney fashion. Thus, resulted in a compromise that is clearly viewed in the attraction. In the video “Legends of The Haunted Mansion: Halloween Special“ by a self-proclaimed Disney Historian, Dallin Smith, states, “Famously, Marc Davis and Claude Coates disagreed on whether the ride should be scary or funny in the classic Disney way. Eventually, they both got their way with the beginning half up until the attic scene being relatively creepy. Then, the graveyard through the end of the attraction being fun and Disney style.” In a sense, Smith is stating that the start of the ride was the vision that Davis had to imagine, along with the second half being what Coates envisioned. With the first half of the ride being frightening and disturbing, and the fear being isolated in the darkness that surrounds the guest in their “Doom Buggy” (ride vehicle). The second half of the ride, providing a sensation of comedic and wackiness of ghosts enjoying themselves in the afterlife. However, Walt Disney's spooky venture was one that needed to develop on visitors throughout time, mainly due to the attraction having technical issues often, and of course people fearing of the attraction itself. Also, in the article “The Dark, Troubled History of Disney’s Haunted Mansion” states, “Over time, people grew more comfortable with the amalgam of funny and scary bits intrinsic to the attraction. The Haunted Mansion eventually became one of the most beloved attractions first at Disneyland and later, Walt Disney World and the other Disney theme parks across the globe.” Inherently, Mumpower is revealing that the ride wasn’t an immediate success with Disneyland attendees. As time progress, people become comfortable with the ride and soon becoming one of the most recognized attractions in the world. Currently, The Haunted Mansion is celebrating its forty-ninth anniversary of haunting guests and plans to haunt guests till the end of time. Despite the fact, it has been Walt Disney’s dream to witness the ride, sadly, he passed away three years before the opening of the attraction. Nevertheless, the ride became what Walt Disney imagined.
