Revant Mohanasundaram Novak Honors English 2, Period 3 The Date Nobility Within Darius and Gatsby Literature usually represents nobility in a way that one is superior to another. True nobility stands for how a person has improved over time. Characters such as Darius and Gatsby, demonstrate nobility through their development over time throughout the story/novel. Darius from “Darius The Great Is Not Okay” has a constant struggle with his bi-cultural identity and his mental health, but he develops to become an even better version of himself who understands acceptance and the Persian heritage. Gatsby is portrayed as being born into a poor family in North Dakota. During his life there he met Dan Cody, a rich businessman who was on a yacht in Lake Superior. Gatsby and Cody develop a close relationship, Cody becomes drunk often so Gatsby usually takes care of him. When Cody died he left Gatsby with $25k but Gatsby was unable to claim it because Cody s wife did not allow for it. Gatsby then sees Daisy and falls in love but because of his enlistment, he has to leave for war so he leaves promising that he will be back. After coming back from war, he realizes that Daisy married Tom. Gatsby then chooses to gain wealth and take over Daisy s heart. Gatsby makes loads of money from doing illegal activities such as selling alcohol (which was illegal after the 18th Amendment, which banned the manufacture, sale, and transport of alcoholic beverages). This shows he has improved his wealth, but he chose the wrong path. As for Darius, he comes from a Persian/American family, and he is unable to figure out who he is. Darius goes to Iran to meet his parents for the first time, but he is very disconnected from
