On November 26th, 2000, the lives of Hillary Hawkhead, Sharon Hawkhead and Michelle Tiernan were turned completely upside down. On that night, Leanne Tiernan disappeared after Christmas shopping with a friend. Her family never saw her again, until about one year later; the reunion was one that no mother would ever want to have with her child. The next time was to be seen, was after being tortured and murdered by a psychopath. Leanne Tiernan was a happy and confident teenage girl. She was born on September 27, 1984 in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. 16 years later, on the 26th day of November, at exactly 4:50 pm, Leanne went missing. That day began as a normal one, with Leanne and her grandmother, Hillary, going to church. After church, they had breakfast at home, some coffee and biscuits. After breakfast, Leanne wanted to go Christmas shopping with her friend Sarah, so they can buy each other presents. After shopping they both decided to go back home in order to be there for dinner. A young women’s body had been found in a shallow grave in Lindley Woods. This body was wearing the exact same clothes Leanne wore on the day she went missing; police knew it had to be her. The body had been wrapped around in green bin-liners, tied with twine. Covering the head was a black bin-liner, held together with a dog collar tied around the neck. The hands had been tied together with cables. By examining the muscle density and the pace of the decomposition, it was known that the body had been at the site for only a couple of days and that indeed it was Leanne’s body. This gave police hope that enough forensic evidence would be found to lead them to a killer.
