The Death Of Ivan Ilych Essay The short story “The Death Of Ivan Ilych” puts me through an emotional roller coaster. I will be discussing the impressions I’ve experienced throughout the story beginning with the feelings of Ivan’s friends towards his death followed by Ivans past life and concluding with the lead-up to his death. To begin, Ivans friends are described as the practical type who show no sympathy towards the death Ivan. This confused me because they described Ivan as someone who is liked by all. At the start, I do not really develop any sort of connection to any of the characters. There is an overload of names thrown at me and I don’t really feel like they are important. All I know is that they are selfish. His friends express “It is he who is dead and not I” (759). They all felt that it doesn’t make any difference in their life because their still alive. To show some type of generosity, they feel it is important to go to Ivans funeral but all they can think about prior was the boredom they will experience throughout this long ceremony.“Are these truly Ivans close friends?” I thought to myself. He had all the traits of an amazing kid and the narrator describes him as “le phénix de la famille” (764) translated to the prize of the family. As a child, Ivan did bad things which caused him to have regret. After realizing that good people do in fact have flaws, he forgot about it and let it all go. I now begin to develop a connection towards some of the characters. In this case, I can relate to Ivan. Whenever I feel that I am at fault or inflict harm on another person whether it is my intentions or not, I instantly feel regret until I am reassured that good people indeed do bad things.
