The Death of Archbishop Oscar Romero Archbishop Oscar Romero is a religious martyr who sacrificed himself for the common man’s revolution in El Salvador. Romero is a remnant for the historical transition of feudal societies in all of Latin America. This classic resistance movement describes the separation of church and state; freeing religious influences in the government, in hopes of creating a secularized state. The change redefined church's role in El Salvadoran society, challenging the socio-political reality and the impact of the oligarchy’s dominance on civil society. The oligarchy is a group of minority state elites known as the “fourteen families”, who control the political and economic institutions of El Salvador. The Archbishop’s last homily relates to the theory of salvation; the deliverance of sin and its consequences brought about by the faith in Christ. He continued, “In the name of God, then, and in the name of this suffering people, whose cries to heaven each day more tumultuous, I beseech you, I beg you, I order you, in the name of God, stop the repression?” Romero’s intent was to relate the suffering of the common person as the suffering of all, regardless of social class and status. Romero hoped that the suffering of the commoners would emotionally effect the death squad soldiers, to mobilize as a rebellion to oppose the authoritarian government.
