The Decay of Miss Emily William Cuthbert Faulkner born in 1897, in New Albany, Mississippi, was known as one of the twentieth century’s greatest writers. “Although we think of Faulkner primarily as a novelist, he wrote nearly a hundred short stories.” (29). His most famous piece and the first to be published majorly was “A Rose for Emily.” Taking place in the very late 1800’s Miss Emily Grierson was known as an aristocrat. Her father passes leaving her alone, the Negro manservant being her only companion until she meets Horner Barron. Miss Emily not of right mind once her father dies, becomes involved with Barron. Involved, only to poison him, leaving a terrible odor coming from her home. The townspeople make complaints to the authorities about the gut wrenching stench. The townspeople felt Miss Emily’s father dying and being lonely caused her to cling to Barron desperately. The unknown narrator explains how Horner Barron tells the men he is not the marrying kind. This leaves the townspeople disgraced in Miss Emily’s relationship and they find lost relatives of hers to come take hold of the matter. Once more, exposing more decay in Miss Emily’s life. Ongoing the story pronounces how Miss Emily buys poison, men’s toiletries personalized with the letters H. B. engraved on them, dress clothing and a nightshirt. Barron then leaves due to relatives being there and of course for not being the marrying kind. The cousins then leave feeling there is no more need to be there.
