Transhumanism
The word transhuman can, by some, be simply described as the transition between states of humanness. However, the ideas behind this word is far more complex. Transhumanist believe that human species today are in a transitional state. They believe that with modern technology we are essentially the initiators of our evolution from our transitional state to our post-human one. Humanity+’s, formerly The World Transhumanist Association’s, current definition of transhumanism gives the impression that with the advancement of the present and the predicted future technologies, in the future, humans be enhanced substantially. Some believe the human species have always been transhuman by definition. Paleolithic hunters developed sharpened stones over millennia each stage of the sharpened stones corresponded with different cognitive stages of the hunters, according to Sander van der Leeuw. It can be argued by some that while it is true humans have been effecting change, both positive and negative, in world and ourselves since the being of our species, we have previously been manipulating our external world to enhance our being. For example, the creation of spears, eyeglasses, and telephones allow humans to be somewhat different from beings we were prior to theses developments. The point transhumanist are making about transhumanism is the human species are moving away from the prior forms of evolution in that we are now manipulating our internal beings. We beginning to cross the threshold of what it currently means to be human, if can define the term, by redesigning ourselves in our own image. Manipulating our genes and minds to give us favorable traits and remove the biological and physical limitations humans today posses. Being able to live a long healthy life may enable one to establish both a healthy career and family life. Also, it may give one the opportunity spend more time with their loved ones. However, there are many who believe that a long life will have consequences that are dire enough to not pursue a lifespan increasing techniques and technologies. There some skeptics that believe scientist are on a quest to simply prolong death and despise the idea of living longer in a declined state. These problems and benefits only seem to scratch the surface of what life prolong technologies have the capability of affecting. If scientists in the near future were able to develop a pill, for example, that would all humans to double their life expectancy and never experience the negative side affects of aging, that pill would be considered a level one technology. This meaning there is a direct cause and effect or problem and solution this technology is offering. The problem, aging, the solution, the pill. While this may seem grand and wonderful to some, even to those in fear of prolonged death, there will be possible system of consequences that can or cannot be foreseen or prepared for. Level two technologies are often the cause obstacles that hinder level one technologies from being as effective as they are.
