His past in slavery is something he was unable to forget and believes that being a slave made him a traitor because he did not fight back. He continued to live as a slave, never once questioning the white mans authority. At the ballroom in the hotel, the boys in the battle royal are used as entertainment and the narrator realizes that his speech may not be the reason he is at the meeting. During the match, the narrator finds himself in a struggle for survival and tries to get away from participating but he must fight his way through. During his speech, the narrator says “social equality” instead of social responsibility” and the white men are quick to point out his mistake ,”We mean to do right by you, but you’ve got to know your place at all times.
The American Dream was once the idea of being able to come from poverty and take that and create something from nothing making a better life for one’s family than had in the past. In the book They Say, I say With Readings Cal Thomas and Brandon King have both written papers discussing the topic of the American dream each author using a different angle to exploit their views on the topic. This paper will analyze both author’s texts, creating three different points made by each and comparing them. The first point will be on the American Dream and how it is portrayed in both texts. The second point will cover any texts used in the essays in comparison to the other paper and how those writings improve the author’s argument.
Emotion has a way of worming through shields and walls, penetrating even the most guarded heart. The way MLK phrases what he wanted to say thunders loudly, rings clearly and boldly. Delving into detail of how the Negro is specifically suffering a loss of dignity and self importance by the segregation that treats them like petty animals, being herded, speaks much more loudly than simply stating that Negroes are degraded and treated poorly.
The way he talks about the black slave’s actions towards the whites and how blacks have a kinder soul than the whites. He says that “… there is a solemn awe in the hearts of blacks, as it respects murdering men: whereas the whites, (though they are great cowards) …, they murder all before them…” (pg. 24). In the story, he tells about the black woman helping the white man runaway this how he explains it. He sees that even though blacks have that kind part in them that to live and go against the whites being nice ever so little will hurt the whole operation. This article really spoke to the blacks about unity and that the only way to achieve that is to only care for one another and not the whites.
Claim: Because of Tom’s race, he was misjudged and looked at as a threat to society. 1. Primary Evidence: When Bob Ewell says, “I seen that black nigger younder ruttin’ on my Mayella,” it explains that people just saw someone’s skin color and assumed that the colored person was up to no good (Lee 173). 2. Interpretation: Tom was wrapped up in evil and was misjudged harshly by his skin color and was “shot down” like a mockingbird by racism.
The author of this book is telling the story of his experience in slavery and the dominance white people have over black people. Being African-American, the author, Solomon Northup, has a rare point of view that most of the audience can’t relate to. This quote is at the very beginning of the book, so the reader immediately knows that the point of view this story will be told with the rarity of someone who has actually experienced the worst forms of slavery. The characters throughout the play shows that they felt they couldn't do something a white person could do just because they are black and get treated differently. But if something is unfair and you stand up for what you want, then you will get what you want. Race plays a big part in this play because if the Youngers weren't black, they most likely wouldn't have experienced the things they went through just because of the color of their skin. The story would be different because of something small like that. Following your dreams is important no matter what your race is because if it unfair or something that you want then you should stand up for it like what the Youngers did.

This shows that Europeans are titling blacks as thieves, prostitutes, and murders. They are pretty much titling them as their downfall to society. They are blaming all of the bad stuff that happens in there everyday life on the Blacks of South Africa. They are not seeing the big picture which is that the white forced themselves into their land and caused them to become poor and are forcing them to scramble for money.
