Mike is one of the youngest members of the gang featured in The Destructors by Graham Greene. He seemingly has a welcoming home and very few issues in his home life, but this is not so as the reason he joined the gang because of his “need for recognition and power” (Gangs, para. 5), as well as his wants for “[c]ompanionship, training, excitement, and activities” (Gangs, para. 6). Mike is believed to be an only child due to the fact his parents are constantly worried about his safety, in the novel he is the one of the few children that constantly has to go home for dinner or various other reasons. By Mike possibly being an only child this means that he would crave adventure and activities with those his own age. “Mike had had a stroke of luck.
