In The Devil in the White City, by Erik Larson, descriptions of the amazing structures built for the Chicago World Fair of 1893 are included. Many aspects of the architecture were some of the greatest and newest of that time. The attendants of the fair were in awe of the beauty, buildings and structures, and great inventions. “The fair’s greatest impact lay in how it changed the way Americans perceived their cities and their architects. It primed the whole of America — not just a few rich architectural patrons — to think of cities in a way they never had before” (Larson 373). Some popular modern day activities, attractions, and ideas in America were developed as a result of visions created from the concepts and creation of the Ferris Wheel. The Ferris Wheel was the first real amusement ride. It seems as though the wheel gave a vision for the future idea of roller coasters, theme parks and amusement parks. Even today, in most theme parks and fairs we see Ferris Wheels. “The fair had a powerful and lasting impact on the nation’s psyche, in ways both large and small. Walt Disney’s father, Elias, helped build the White City; Walt’s Magic Kingdom may well be a descendant. Certainly the fair made a powerful impression on the Disney family” (373). The architecture and just the fair itself had a possible impact on the future vision of Walt Disney World, and maybe the company of Walt Disney itself.
