Can humanity improve upon dismal conditions? In The Diary of Anne Frank by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, The play tells the story of a young Jewish girl who is hiding in an annex with her family and others during WW11. She resides in this annex in fear of for more than two years. She begins her time in this annex as rebellious, then regretful, and finally thoughtful which shows even through dark times humans can change for the better. To begin with, Anne was rebellious. One example of this is when she defied what her mom wanted. Anne disobeyed her mom's wishes, “Who cares if it’s dignified, I don’t want to be dignified” (27). We can infer that at the beginning of the play, Anne was acting rebellious. Later, Anne is rebellious again. She mimics Mrs. Van Daan to mock Mr. Van Daan, “ Remember Mr. So-and-So, Remember I am a lady” (37). This behavior showcases Anne's tendency of rebelling against people who tell her what to do at the start of the book. When she regrets her actions it is her first step towards self-improvement. It starts when Anne is apologetic when she asks for her mother to leave the room, “ oh Pim I was horrible wasn’t I” (58). She mourned her acts toward her mother which indicates the changes that she is going through. Afterward, Anne continues to confide in her father about her regret. Anne then reveals to her dad that she is trying to be a better person, “ I’m trying. Really I am. Every night I think back about the things I did wrong…” (58).
