Blunt and Honest
In today’s society, Caution has been thrown into the wind when it comes to the word RESPECT. In our society today, people no longer respect or care about each other’s feelings all in the name of being blunt and honest. Nowadays, the word “Honesty” is confused with the word “Bluntness.” People often use being “honest” and "blunt" as an excuse to be disrespectful to others. This article attempts to present an unequivocal understanding of these two terms, while highlighting the differences in how the connotation of the words deals with respectfulness.
Often times, “Honesty” is confused with “Bluntness.” The English Oxford Dictionary defined honesty as the quality of being seemly or appropriate; conformity to accepted or suitable standards of behavior; decency, decorum; and politeness. While Bluntness on the other hand, is defined as Rudeness, absence of delicacy or refinement; abruptness of manner or address, curtness. (OED) The words honesty is confused with bluntness. According to Megan Wittorp in her article “There’s A Difference between Being Blunt and Being Rude” she explains that most people typically use the word “Blunt” to express their straightforwardness and honesty, they often take great pride in this trait when they speak their mind without wavering, and they don’t realize or choose not to accept the fact that it is not an acceptable excuse for disrespect.” (Wittorp).
