In the article, “The Digital Parent Trap” Eliana Dockterman discusses the benefits of young children using technology. Dockterman view technology as the future of learning for young children as more things in school are being done on computers than paper. Dockterman attempts to persuade parents to embrace young kids using technology with logos, ethos, and meaningful insights. Dockterman’s use logos, the most viewed method in her article, persuades the reader with concrete data to support her claim. The writer uses statistical data to support the advantages of children using technology. Dockterman finds a study done by SRI International, a nonprofit research firm, conducted a test and show that kids that played a game called Samorost, a video game that solves puzzles, did 12% better on logic tests than the ones that didn’t play the game. The study sounds childish because it involves kids playing video games. Dockterman has a strong argument along with testimonies and data to back up her belief, while at the same time looking into the parent’s viewpoint on why they’re so hesitant to let kids into the internet at any time. Many young couples will probably be fine with their kids using iPads or iPhones, but the older ones will be more hesitant because they didn’t have these things when they were growing up and were raised in a different way of living. That’s why Dockterman wanted to write this article, to convince them not to fear technology and to rather accept it. Even if Dockterman can’t convince everyone, nevertheless she made her point that there are many different things a person can do in smartphone, so who knows young kids can learn from a video
