The Dinoflagellates In The Microbial Loop

Being an important component in the microbial loop is another significant role of the dinoflagellates in the ocean. Referring to Microbial loop (2011), microbial loop is used illustrate the microbial food web. This general interaction begins with the dissolved organic matter (DOM) as the main energy source. Variety of bacteria consumes DOM as their source of energy which then these bacteria are consumed by protozoans, microbe consumers of bacteria and also algae. Because of the DOM, oceanic bacteria are plentiful of carbon and other components of nutrients. The energy that is gained from the DOM will be utilized all through the different trophic level. While photosynthetic dinoflagellates like zooxanthellae forms mutualistic relationship with other …show more content…

The ocean get its crucial source of DOM from algal and dinoflagellate exudates. Through the exudates, DOM can be introduced into the ocean other than by sloppy feeding and from the waste product excretion from the aquatic organisms. The oceanic bacteria are in competition for the phytoplankton in order to get their share of the organic and inorganic substrates from the process of photosynthesis.
The third major ecological role of the dinoflagellate in the ocean is that they assist the reef-building corals. Dinoflagellates are act as symbionts with many types of protists and invertebrates such as the corals (Coffroth and Santos, 2005). Most of the photosynthetic dinoflagellates carry out symbiotic interactions with other aquatic organisms in the ocean. Dinoflagellates as in zooxanthellae, are found inside the tissues of the corals in the tropical region (Thornton, 2012). Zooxanthellae and the corals interact with each other through
