While the school administration argues that the dress code brings school unity, they are wrong because it takes away a sense of individuality from each student (Logos, concede). In today’s society, people use fashion and their daily outfits as a key way to express themselves. Students are constantly told throughout their school careers that they should demonstrates what makes them “different”, yet uniforms deny that sense of self-expression. According to Grace Chen of the Public School Review, uniforms may result in students turning to “other avenues of self-expression that may be viewed as even more inappropriate than clothing” (Ethos, professional credibility). This includes a nontraditional hairstyle, make up, or acting out towards authority at school or at home.
I’m trying to convince the Carmel Clay school board to enforce school uniforms. I believe in this claim, and there are a lot of reasons on why I do. The first reason I believe this is because uniforms are an easy way to stay focused on schoolwork, rather than what you’re wearing. The second reason is that this can decrease the amount of bullying that goes on in schools since students will all be wearing the same uniforms. The third and final reason I support this claim is because of time management, and easier organization with your uniform.
Lately, most kids or pre-teens are starting to dress to old for what age they really are. A solution that is by having school uniforms, they provoke that problem. School uniforms should be required for public schools. They have been increasing in public schools for the past five years. One in five public schools require school uniforms.
In the college of De La Salle Lipa, students have a popular issue: Can the school uniform be replaced with casual attire? Because of that, a survey was conducted to 50 college students of DLSL to know what they choose to wear and the reason behind their choice. Results shows that 64% of them would want to wear casual attire in going to school due to convenience, freedom of expression, and fashion. However, the remaining 36% of the interviewed students prefer the usual tradition of wearing school uniforms due to the fear of being bullied and criticize on what they will wear due to the availability and style of the clothes they have. Reading those figures, it only shows how students prioritize their physical performance more than their class performance.
Dress codes lock schools up like jail, and they don’t give students any freedom. Because of school dress codes, kids are revolting at this decision. People enforced dress codes so students couldn’t distract one another, as a result dress codes have impeded learning in many schools. Many people favor dress codes, yet they cost extra money, limit the student’s freedom, and they can be uncomfortable, which is why dress codes are unnecessary.
To begin with, students shouldn’t wear uniforms because it violates a student’s right for freedom. For example, quoting, “https://www.greatschools.org/gk/articles/school-uniforms/” by Marian Wilde, “School uniforms violate a student’s right to freedom of expression...makes a target for bullies from other schools, are difficult to enforce in public schools, and are a financial burden for poor families.” This means that some families aren’t able to afford the school uniforms. School uniforms are a waste of money and time. The author of “The High Cost of School Uniforms,” Matt Forster declared that “School uniforms maybe a financial burden to poorer families, who will be forced to buy uniforms in addition to regular clothing or are forced to buy second-hand uniforms…” Many poorer families go to public schools and having students wear uniforms will make it stressful for poor families because that’s another waste of money. Also many families have more than one child, which will make the buying uniforms very costly. According to a teacher and parent Lisa Runge, she states that “the average cost of school uniforms for parents is $249 per child.” The price per child shows that they are too expensive, also families have to pay taxes, buy food, etc.
Some parents that are on a strict budget don’t want to and can’t pay the extra money for a uniform. School uniforms: Pros and Cons says, “Parents raise concerns about the cost.” Some other families can’t even afford these uniforms and are using all their money just to provide needed things like food or appliances to use around the house. Clearly, the evidence shows that most students and parents think school uniforms are expensive.
Envision waking up every morning to put on the same outfit and walk out the door, stress free. People would not have to worry about what fits, or what is fashionable at the time. Schools would not have to worry about inappropriate clothing but at the same time, that clothing may be a way for a student to express himself. Many schools view uniforms as a solution to several problems, but many schools view uniforms as a lack of self expression. School uniforms should continue, even though children may not get to express themselves, because they prohibit violence, provide cheaper lifestyles, and promote better education.
For example,you don’t want to buy something for your child that they won’t want to wear or use, especially if they don’t help with absolutely anything. To sum up the fact, many of the people who agree on not having school uniforms stand strongly. However, they are completely convinced they will work wonders for two main justification bullying can’t be eliminated and clothing can’t boost performance in academic environments.
Many students that know uniforms will be beneficially, but don’t agree with school uniforms will continue to disagree with implementing them. It can be easily agreed that school uniforms may take away their self-expression in school, but what matters more in school is the way of learning. It can also be agreed that many students do not accept the self-expression of their classmates and make fun of them. Students, parents, and school administration should be able to recognize the benefits that school uniforms come with.
This shows uniforms can remove distractions from what students wear. School uniforms create a level playing field among students, reducing peer pressure and bullying. When all students are dressed alike, competition between students over clothing choices and the teasing of those who are dressed in less expensive or less fashionable outfits can be eliminated. By enforcing school uniforms, schools hope that uniforms will decrease the pressure felt by students to wear the most popular trends and lessen the harsh judgement of other students.
