Introduction The documentary Addiction by HBO portrays the alcohol and drug addiction in the most eye-opening sense. More often than not, people have the idea that one-day they will find the strength to quit or give it up their addictions. However, that is not the case because the addiction only keeps getting worse and worse until help is sought out. Addiction will start at approximately the ages of 18 and 25 (Garbus, Liz) and, for some, will continue for their entire life. Despite this, with new advancements, it is becoming more common for people with addictions to find an effective treatment that works for them. For Aubrey, her addiction forced her into stealing from her mother in order to feed her habit (Froemke, Susan & Maysles, Albert). She has to find ways to obtain money so she can continue to supply for the drugs she needs. Additionally, while many addicts start so young, the National Survey on Drug Use and Health found that “23.9 million Americans aged 12 or older were current (past month) illicit drug users” (Substance, 2013, pg. 1). Consequently, there is an average of “52.1 percent of Americans aged 12 or older reported being current drinkers of alcohol” (Substance, 2013, pg. 3). It is a continuing problem that needs much attention and its lifelong consequences need to be known. Not treating or relapsing on it when a tough situation comes in the way tends to be the reason many drug and alcohol addicts fall back on what makes them “feel good”. In my opinion, I think those who are addicted to either drugs or alcohol need to be able to admit that they have a problem as well as have motivation within themselves to want to quit, in order to actually be able to recover properly and in hopes of not using
