All throughout my childhood, I was someone who was very skilled in the sport of soccer. My ability and size allowed me to easily succeed without much challenge from other players. I was always the top scorer on my park-league soccer teams and received a lot of attention from it. Over time I began to get very full of myself and my ability. With this sense of pride, I created a dream of wearing a captain’s armband for my local high school. When I got into my first year of high school and the coach handed me a varsity jersey, I thought I had the world in the palm of my hand. Little did I know, that first year was going to be a major wake up call. It was a very rough soccer season for me that year. I was no longer the most talented or biggest on the field and, instead of being the most confident player on the field, I was now one of the most timid. This was brand new territory for me, and I had a lot of trouble handling it on and off the field. Since Santiago is a very poor man and he is from a very small town, he believes that his dream of becoming a professional soccer player may be a waste. This is all changed when Santiago had his skill noticed by a former professional soccer player who had played for Newcastle United.
