In 1996, GM realized that they needed a new engine to compete with opponents, but to do this they needed to start from scratch. GM mostly needed a new reliable engine that would outlast the competitor. According to Jim Kerekes, the author of “The Duramax Diesel 6600 Story,” GM made the decision to partner with Isuzu Motors Ltd., which was a clear choice for them because they had a strong background in diesel engines. Isuzu had a plan for a clean slate which is what GM wanted but Isuzu needed 6 years to fully develope the engine.
