The Dust Bowl Chapter Summary

A good theme is the dust bowl. Because the book talks about it a lot and the depression the people went through and what they did to survive the tactics of how and what they did to get the land back to be able to farm the land again. The book does a good job of showing the struggle that the people in the southern plains had to face in 1930 – 1936. Its show how the government tried to help people by giving the farmers and people that wanted to work bulldozers to turn the land. To try and get the bottom soil on top and the soil that turn to sand on the bottom in hope that the sand like soil would turn back into the rich dirt that it was before. The way that this book relates to the real thing is how it tells you about how good the agriculture and the amount of crops the farmers grow and how farmers were pretty wealthy. Before all the farming got out of hand and more and more people started coming to the land and expanding their farm land. But before that the land in the southern the agriculture was actually helping the economy. With its over abundance of food the land produced. It was very fertile land it produced a lot of crops. Farmers were wealthy do to the amount of crops they were producing they ended up becoming over a abundant with food and they could not sell it all and became overstock. But that all changed when to many farmers tried to farm the land and then the land started to dry out it got hard and unusable. Then the ground became sand and they started to have severe dust storms very mild wind where it was destroying houses and whatever crops were trying to grow. People started leaving trying to find a new area to farm and everyone that was left like the shop keeps and other types of store owners ran out of business, lost their jobs or starve to death crime was high it was almost an everyone for their self type of
