The story line of the Edict of Nantes The Edict of Nantes was a declaration of religious toleration. It was made by King Henry IV allowing the Huguenots to live in peace and build places to worship in France. The cause for the creation of the Edict of Nantes was because 26 years before it was made there was a six-week nationwide slaughter of the Huguenots. What started this was the 1572 St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre, the location of this massacre was in the city of Paris. This massacre occurred when many Huguenot noble were visiting the city of Paris, because many of them were attending the marriage of Catherine. (Daughter of the Huguenot prince Henry of Navarre.) Henry was robust, athletic, and handsome. When both Catherine and her last son died in 1589, Prince Henry IV came into throne. Henry became the first king of the Bourbon Dynasty in France. As the king of France King Henry showed or proved himself to be decisive, and fearless in battle, as well as showing that he (Henry) was a clever politician. Later on in Henry’s rule many people started to oppose him for being a Protestant king in France, so Henry fell under the pressure and converted to being a catholic king. Once Henry did this he realized that many people would start to go after the Huguenots again so in 1598 king Henry took another step forward to healing France’s wounds. King Henry said/declared that the Huguenots could live in peace in France and they are also eligible to set up their own houses of worship in some cities.
