Students use different study methods and study in different environments. Majority of students in this century study with background music. According to Rudy Miller (2015) who holds her masters’ degree in English and arts, 53% of students multitask while studying and 87% of those students chose to listen to music. Countless research has tried to prove the question of whether or not listening to music while studying helps students absorb more information and do well in school or if it distracts them causing their marks to be lower. • Students study by means of listening to their preferred music since they feel in their comfort zone without knowing if it benefits them or not. Hip-Hop music was chosen for this experiment since it covers a wide variety of songs and most students listen to it on a daily basis.
Aim: To determine the effect of Hip-Hop music on one’s memory
Sub Aim: To determine the difference (if any) in the marks of males and females.
Hypothesis: Hip-Hop music has a negative effect on one’s memory.
Sub Hypothesis: Girls perform better with the presence of background Hip-hop music.

A study conducted by Furnham, and McClelland (2011) tested the effects of background music which could be normal noises and/or music. After the experiment was conducted they came to a conclusion that background noises such as music do not benefit students in helping them memorize information and performing well in the test. Referring back to the hypothesis; music, background noise or any other form of distractions do not benefit people in memorizing/concentrating on what is required from them. This source is seen as valid source since it proves the hypothesis although there were some differences such as they performed the experiment with normal noises and some background music whereas the aim of this experiment is to prove that listening to hip- hop music while studying is a distraction and the people who did the experiment are still studying towards their
