The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini is a moving story about the lives of children in Kabul, Afghanistan. It begins with a boy named Amir, who is best friends with his servant Hassan, but Amir struggles with this relationship because Hassan is in fact his servant. When Hassan is attacked by a bully named Assef, Amir is too cowardly to stand up for him and instead hides. He escapes from Afghanistan to America and lives with guilt on this subject for a long time, until Hassan is killed by the Taliban. Amir is able to find redemption in helping Hassan’s son, Sohrab.
The Kite Runner is a brilliant book by Khaled Hosseini. This novel tells the story of a Pashtun family and their Hazara servants. Amir, who is the narrator, witnesses an event that becomes a pivotal moment in his life that leaves him with a vast amount of guilt. After Ali and Hassan leave, Baba and Amir escape to America in hopes of having a better life. Amir is forced to grow up much faster, so he can take care of his father, and meets the daughter of General Taheri, Soraya; eventually they get married.

The Kite Runner, aggressors evoke guilt and shame in their victims in order to maintain their power, bespeaking the human need to be in control. Characters understand the appeal of power at a young age. Even as a child, Amir manipulates Hassan’s loyalty in order to make himself feel superior. Amir has always felt inferior to Hassan, mainly due to his yearning for Baba’s love.
“The Kite Runner” openly begins with the story of Amir and his servant/best friend Hassan and all the adventures and struggles they experienced throughout their life. Towards the middle of the book it is revealed that Amir betrayed his best friend in an unthinkable. It is also revelaed that Ali and Baba both grew up together and were practically like brothers. The author discloses at the end of the book that Baba also betrayed his friend in the most unthinkable way. Readers come to realize that both Amir and Baba are not so different after all, the closest people to them in the end were betrayed the most.

The book follows a character named Amir as he goes through life as a child as well as his deep friendship with a boy named Hassan. A series of unfortunate events escalate a conflict prompting Amir with the need to resolve them. The book begins in medias res, until a phone call prompts the book to start back in the years of his youth.

In The Kite Runner, the author tells a story of the close friendship of two boys who come from different social classes, Amir being the wealthy boy and Hassan the servant. It takes place in Kabul, Afghanistan in 1978, a time where the separation of Hazara Shia Muslims and Sunni Muslims took place. A part in the book where we witness betrayal of their friendship and this division of culture is after the yearly kite tournament where Hassan goes after the kite Amir won and promises to bring it back to him. During his search for the kite, Hassan encounters Assef and his friends, who constantly bullied Amir, threatened Hassan to give up the kite or pay the price. Being that Hassan was loyal and wanted to keep his promise to Amir, he decided to pay the price which was rape.
The Kite Runner beautifully depicts the friendship between Amir and Hassan, and portrays the raw turning point in their friendship which will forever change the both of them. The theme of guilt and redemption is strongly evident throughout the film and in the end, the kite not only serves as a symbol of friendship but that of triumph. These two ethnic groups are very different. The Pashtuns are the upper class and the Hazaras were much lower than them. Most Hazaras worked for Pashtuns, in this case, Amir is a Pashtun and Hassan is a Hazara that works for him and his father.
