1. What is her primary claim? in her article “the end of the college essay” Rebecca Schuman argues that college essays shouldn’t be used in required courses anymore. Schuman claims that “everybody in college hates papers” and that many students have trouble writing college essays either way therefore she feels there’s no need to have students write college papers.
2. What evidence does she use to support her claim?
Rebecca Schuman supports her claim by stating that students will do anything to avoid writing a college paper (things like buying, borrowing and stealing other people’s work). Schuman claims that plagiarism is so common now and teachers dislike grading papers as much as students hate writing them. Schuman also claims that many of the topics assigned to students are useless she believes that college students could learn more from any type of examination. In the second paragraph, Schuman provides what she believes every college student does when they are assigned a writing assignment “summarize the same four plot points 50 times until you hit Page 5, and then crap out a two-sentence conclusion?”. Rebecca Schuman’s essay is very informal yet she utilizes a couple of overly complex words like defeatist, tribulations, abjectly righteously non-sequitur, among others. The essay follows Schuman’s observations and experiences rather than facts from known sources.
