In “Girl Unprotected”, Sports writer and journalist Laura Robinson argues that if you examine the Judicial system, then you will find a strong bias against victims of hockey abuses with an emphasis against women. Throughout her essay, Robinson uses the case against Mike Danton and the NHL to emphasize the issues of gender inequality and the lack of recognition to the abuses in hockey. In her essay, Laura Robinson begins her argument by claiming that “women’s bodies were only allowed to be adjectives to describe men” (Robinson 326). By doing so, she suggests that women’s bodies are all that the men in hockey care about while their mind’s and talents are ignored and lack in value. The film Girl’s Trip has been applauded for being a celebration of blackness in the primarily white film industry. The majority of the cast and the writers for Girl’s Trip are people of color. The film was much more successful than its “white counterpart” Rough Night in box office revenue and reviews. However, most of the black characters in Girl’s Trip shift through various controlling images throughout the movie. The reason these stereotypes are less obvious than they are in some other films is because each characters portrays multiple stereotypes and different times throughout the film.
Girl, Interrupted, written by Susanna Kaysen in 1967, is a thought provoking memoir following her and fellow parents’ tragic and twisted experiences in McLean Mental Hospital. As a young adult Susanna Kaysen tried to commit suicide by swallowing a bottle of pills and following it with a bottle of alcohol. Her parents were very worried about her and suggested her to go to a doctor that her dad once knew. Kaysen visited the doctor who, after talking to her for a while, requested that she be sent to one of the best mental hospitals in her area. She had been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder.
"The Girl Who Survived" by Carol Bierman and Bronia Brandman. This book is about a family who went into hiding during the holocaust. Bronia starts of at the age of nine years old and ends up being the only one out of her family to survive. Bronia along with Mila, Mendek, and Bonzeka are the main characters in this book. The story was about the family and unsuspected new friends and what they experienced long the way.
In Carol Clover’s famous essay “ Her body, herself: Gender in the slasher”, she explains that there are 6 explicit parts that make up a “slasher” , “the terrible place”, “the killer”,”weapons”, “victims”, “final girl” and “shock.” Carroll goes on to explain that a final girl is the one who typically has to carry the burden of the experience throughout the rest of her life, is masculinised with a uni-sex or male nickname to fit in with her counterparts, and the person in the film who personifies the terror taking place in the film, and is most of the time female (of course). However,while thinking about these criteria as Caroll lists them, I realized that a male horror character that fits this mold also is Ashly J. Williams from the Evil Dead series. Love tends to effect each character’s action differently. For example, love is what motivated the plot of the story “The Valley of Girls” by Kelly Link. For instance, the Olds observed society and performed actions to make sure their children are aligned with success. Love and social status is what makes these people relate, or correlate with each other; it reminds me of a government politically develop by love and society. In “The Valley of Girls” by Kelly Link, from Teenagers and Old are motivated by two specific motives, which are love and social status.
Around the world, people are viewed as superior to others, leading to some being given more rights than others. The number of rights an individual is given depends on gender, ethnic groups, social class, etc. For example, around the world, men are allowed- and encouraged- to receive an education, whereas women are not forced to. 66 million females are out of school for simple reasons such as religion or traditional beliefs. The females not given the opportunity to receive an education crave the opportunity to learn because they know education can lead to a brighter future.
A Room Providing Freedom? A woman is given limited freedom. Something as simple as a room could give her a sense of liberty. In Virginia Woolf 's article, she claims that "a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction."
As an American basically we are entitled to an academic education. This aspect of being an American is frequently taken for granted. There are some countries where an education is viewed as a luxury. Growing up in this world one needs more than an academic education. One also needs the opportunity to be taught how to deal with life as a whole.
In the novel, The Windup Girl, Paolo Bacigalupi showcase the rape culture through the mistreatment of Emiko, the windup girl. The story takes place in Bangkok, Thailand in the 23rd century, after climate change has flooded and completely wiped out many other nations. The world’s population has been greatly reduced due to plagues and starvation. Additionally, carbon fuel sources have become depleted, and manually wound springs are now being as energy storage devices. Thailand remains standing, even when deep below sea level, because of the levees and pumps protecting the country from water flooding in.
Many critics agree on one fact about Canadian author Alice Munro: one of her most notable qualities in regards to her work is the distinct use of realism in her writing. Her writing provides a strong sense of familiarity to the reader, while also containing stronger metaphorical meanings that one can note when they begin to closely look at her work. Her short story “Boys and Girls” portrays the socialization of a young girl, once very close to her father and unaware of any sort of gender bias within her society, into a young woman with a pessimistic view of femininity and her expected position in society. This story shows the socialization process in a way that makes it easy to recognize, illustrating circumstances that the reader can notice the blatant sexism and misogyny; however, its portrayal is extremely realistic, allowing the reader to recall how oblivious they may have been in the past during times that they have been impacted by social biases in our world. Critics of Munro typically agree on her overall theme of femininity and coming of age in her writings; “Boys and Girls” emphasizes the ways in which young girls are socialized into a seemingly natural understanding of the sexist expectations and gender roles.
