Evolution of Hiram Do you hate hate? Hiram, the main character, lives with his Grandma and Grandpa in Greenwood Mississippi. Hiram's Dad was not satisfied with living in the south due to the hate and racism which made him leave his grandpa behind, moving into another state. Years later Hiram finally gets the OK to return to Greenwood to see his Grandpa and starts to notice and see thighs he hasn't before. Hiram meets a new friend Emmett Till who was a black kid that later was murdered for whistling at a white woman. In the novel, Mississippi Trial, 1955, by Chris Crowe, Hiram, the main protagonist of the story, is a dynamic character who changes drastically over the course of the story. In the beginning of the book, Hiram doesn't realize the hate and racism that he is being surrounded with in the south with his grandpa. Hiram has always been close with his grandparents and loved living there with them while his dad was away at college. Hiram's Dad didn't like Hiram being around grandpa as much due to the racism around him but Hiram didn’t realize what was so bad about it. For example Hiram says “I couldn’t see why people like Dad and Mr.Paul got so worked up over it. Especially when it had nothing to do with them” (Crowe 76). While being back in Greenwood Mississippi for so long, Hiram has had enough for that summer and wanted to go back home after everything that has happened throughout his time being back with his grandpa.
