James Dashner’s dystopian book, “The Eye of Minds,” takes place in the Virtnet, a virtual reality used to escape the real world. Michael, a user of the Virtnet, is asked for help. The VNS needed to find a gamer named Kaine, who has been causing chaos in the Virtnet. To complete the task at hand, Michael comes in contact with many obstacles. Because of this, he has to be determined to defeat Kaine, and bring the Virtnet back to sanity. One common theme throughout the story is that determination will drive you farther than you may have thought possible. “We better hurry or we’ll die of dehydration” (Dashner 250). This quote shows from Michael shows the pain they were going through. They were hungery and the dehydration was setting in. However, they were determined to finish and never quit. “He felt like his body was being slowly roasted in a giant oven” (Dashner 251). This illustrates the sheer heat of the moment. While this is a good point because they are constantly in deadly situations they have to overcome, it fails to account for the fact that Michael and all the players in the Virtnet have cores, which protect them from death in the real world. In a critical scene from the book, a teenage girl was preparing to jump from a bridge. However, she ripped out her core, the only thing that protected her in the real world. “Tanya- wherever her body might be- was dead. She had ripped out her core before dying” (Dashner10, 11). This proves that the core does protect them in the real world for any harm that may come to them in the Virtnet. If she wouldn’t have ripped out her core, she would have died in the Virtnet, but she would have woken up in the real world. Even though some may think fear drives Michael, the real theme is determination will drive you farther than you may have thought
